Massachusetts Steam Navigation Company papers, 1816-1818.

These records of a Salem, Mass., corporation include correspondence, financial, and legal material documenting the building of the steamboat Massachusetts, its financial difficulties, the sale of it to Capt. Charles Vanderford, and its subsequent shipwreck. The correspondence includes difficulties between the company and shipbuilder William Dodge, and the intervention of the Boston firm of P. Revere and Sons. The share certificates were all issued in 1817 by company treasurer Eliphalet Kimball.
